The mixed and pure polyester powder coating systems in China started relatively late. In the early 1980s, the domestic home appliance industry gradually emerged, and foreign polyester powder systems began to enter the Chinese home appliance market. For example, snowflakes, Wanbao refrigerators, and Xiangxuehai refrigerators began to use imported powder coatings. In 1985, Wuxi Paint Factory began producing decorative powder coatings by introducing technology. The main raw material, polyester resin, was imported from foreign countries such as DSM in the Netherlands.

From then on, domestic enterprises began to understand the characteristics of the application of polyester decorative powder coatings in household appliances, and gradually introduced, digested, and developed this technology from abroad. The industrial production of polyester resin for powder coatings in China began in 1985. In order to change the backwardness of domestic polyester powder coatings, Hangzhou Chemical began to contact, inspect, and negotiate with CDF Carbonization Company in France. In February 1985, Hangzhou Sino French Chemical Co., Ltd. (now New Sino French Polymer Materials Co., Ltd.) was established in partnership with Bank of China Hangzhou International Trust Consulting Company to introduce production technology and advanced equipment for general polyester resin for powder coatings from France, and gradually produce and sell it to the outside world, thus ending the history of all imports of polyester resin for powder coatings in China.

Since 1989, Chinese People's Liberation Army Second Artillery Corps Shenjian Chemical Factory (now Anhui Shenjian New Materials Co., Ltd.) and Hangzhou Lin'an Jinying Chemical Factory (now Zhejiang Tiansong New Materials Co., Ltd.) have successively invested in the production of polyester resin for powder coatings. Domestic enterprises have gradually introduced, digested, and developed polyester resin technology from abroad, and have gradually begun the process of localization. In the 1990s, on the basis of absorbing foreign technology, many private enterprises in China began producing polyester resins for powder coatings in Danyang, Wuxi, Anhui Fanchang, Lin'an, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Tianjin, and other places in Jiangsu.

With world-renowned polyester resin production enterprises such as DSM in the Netherlands and UCB Special Surface Technology Company in Belgium investing and building factories in China, as well as the increasing quality requirements for polyester resin in downstream industries, domestic polyester resin manufacturers have formed many patents and proprietary technologies on the basis of introduction, absorption, and independent innovation, and the technical level of the industry has greatly improved.

From the mid to late 1990s and after 2000, China's polyester resin industry entered a period of rapid development, with diversified types of powders and increasingly diverse varieties of polyester. A group of enterprises with annual production and sales of polyester resin reaching tens of thousands of tons, such as Sino French Industry, Shenjian Group, Tiansong New Materials, Southern Resin, Dongguan Youbang, etc., have emerged.

In recent years, with the rapid development of the powder coating market, the prospects of the polyester resin market as the main material have been promising for a long time. Driven by market demand and policy promotion, the polyester resin used in powder coatings has also maintained rapid growth. On the other hand, due to factors such as cost, performance, and environmental protection, the proportion of polyester resin used in powder coatings is gradually increasing, increasingly replacing materials such as epoxy resin. Therefore, the proportion of pure polyester resin in domestic thermosetting powder coatings continues to increase, which is also an important reason why the growth rate of polyester resin is higher than that of powder coatings.

At present, there are many types of powder coatings, and due to the different downstream customers, different powder coating enterprises have significant differences in their requirements for upstream raw materials, factory management, personnel quality, and so on. This also enables polyester resin enterprises to not only develop general-purpose polyester, but also conduct research and development of specialized polyester resins for different industries, which is the main factor in measuring the technical level of polyester resin production enterprises. The requirements for polyester resin vary greatly among powder coatings from different industries.

Some powder coating companies, due to the high quality service requirements of their industry, have a higher demand for the quality of polyester resin. Therefore, they have a certain tolerance for the price of polyester resin and attach great importance to the brand, always putting quality and brand first; Some powder coating companies, due to their low profits, are very sensitive to the price of polyester resin and have low pursuit of brand and quality.
